The brainchild of the late historian David Rattray, this award-winning lodge is set above the Buffalo River, close to the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. The spectacular property is a Natural Heritage site and includes the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives saving the Queen’s Colour of the 24th Regiment. Hospitable and comfortable, Fugitives’ Drift Lodge (pictures 4-6) boasts six picturesque cottages secluded in the trees, all of which enjoy commanding views of one of Africa’s most historically resonant landscapes. Situated on the site of the original Rattray homestead, each spacious cottage spills out onto a private verandah from where you can truly appreciate the breathtaking panorama. The main farmhouse houses a library, lounge and dining room crammed with Zulu war memorabilia and an extensive collection of relics and war artefacts. Dinner is not only a delicious feast but also a captivating evening of fascinating stories about humanity, usually lasting long into the night. You can explore the reserve on foot or on horseback to view the abundant game and birdlife - and excellent fishing on the Buffalo River is also available. Battlefields tours are an essential part of the experience and can be arranged locally. The Guest House (picures 1-3), which is several yards away from the lodge, provides further accommodation in terracotta cottages of an eclectic ethnic design. Attentive, well-informed staff will ensure you leave with a thorough understanding of the region, its people and their history!
