This delightful relaxing retreat in the Kamberg Valley - an almost hidden hollow in the central Drakensberg Mountains - is where South Africa’s President, Thabo Mbeki, unwinds. Approximately 2 hours drive from Durban, the highlight at Cleopatra is, without a doubt, the exceptional cuisine lovingly prepared with the finest local ingredients. Owner-chef Richard Poynton has an international reputation for his innovative culinary talents and many declare the meals alone worth the journey. The evening feast begins with a visit to the well-stocked cellar followed by an elaborate appetite-whetting presentation of the menu. A magnificent 5-course dinner of ‘eclectic, contemporary country cuisine’, created and presented with zeal, is served in the dining room overlooking the trout-filled dam and the striking mountains beyond. Richard has worked in kitchens alongside world-famous chefs, including Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre-White and his attention to detail is almost overwhelming. Everything is freshly prepared on the premises and the range and intensity of flavours is mesmerising! The emphasis at Cleopatra is on comfort and style - elegant colonial touches with an African undertone. Each of the 11 lavishly decorated rooms features a freestanding bathtub, oversized iron bed with snuggly mohair blankets, feather pillows, crisp cotton sheets, fresh flowers and stunning mountain and lake views. Breakfast is served late, allowing you to either liein or enjoy an early morning walk. Picnic baskets for afternoon hikes can easily be arranged. Cleopatra is a haven for food lovers - and yet it remains one of KwaZulu-Natal's best rural retreats.
