Thonga Beach Lodge enjoys a tranquil setting on the shores of one of South Africa’s most remote and scenic locations - unspoilt and little known Mabibi Beach on the Maputaland coast. Situated 20kms north of Sodwana Bay, this is an undiscovered coastal paradise, previously only accessible by 4WD. Surrounded by coastal dune forests and native bush clad hills, Thonga is an idyllic hideaway which enjoys panoramic views of the Indian Ocean from its fabulous location just 50 metres from the beach. Twelve striking thatch and wood beach huts (Thonga's suite-style accommodation) nestle perfectly into the forest - the stylish contemporary interiors reflect the character and charm of the local Thonga fishing villages. Raised on wooden stilts and carefully positioned to ensure complete privacy, each features large glass doors leading out onto a private balcony. Luxurious walk-in showers, deep baths, mini-bars and crisp white linen add to the wildly romantic ambience of this beach wilderness. Thonga Beach Lodge is an eco-tourist’s paradise, designed in complete harmony with the environment and created in conjunction with the local community. The main lodge opens onto an expansive wooden deck where sumptuous meals are served al fresco - or you can even head to the beach for dinner by candlelight on the shores of the Indian Ocean. The lodge, which is part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, falls within a protected marine reserve and offers superb diving and snorkelling - you are even likely to see manta rays and schools of bottlenose dolphins. From November to May, the sea turtles lay their eggs in the soft sands. Thonga is easily accessible via a light aircraft charter from nearby Richard's Bay (the closest domestic airport). There are regular scheduled flights from Johannesburg or Durban to Richard's Bay.
