South African Safari Lodges

There's something about the raw unexpected African bush that captures the heart strings of even the most seasoned of travellers. Lovers of Africa continue to be inspired by the continent's enigmatic spirit which touches your soul. A stay at any one of South Africa's sensational safari lodges will provide a memorable insight into the beguiling charm of Africa's bush. No matter how many times you have been to Africa, each time you land on an airstrip in the bush with the wildlife running inquisitively beside your small aircraft, you will feel as if you have arrived for the first time, such is the unmistakable smell and effervescent clear light of Africa's wilderness. You will immediately be filled with romantic thoughts of a bygone colonial era, a time when Africa's great white hunters disappeared into the bush for months on end (safari is Swahili for a long journey), accompanied by hundreds of porters carting everything from gramophones and silverware, to white linen tablecloths, wine and cigars. In the evenings, meals were served by uniformed waiters in pools of light cast by campfires and gas lamps. The chink of a cool gin and tonic reinforced the romance of this Out of Africa scene. All of this with the encroaching darkness of the African night sky, punctuated by the inquisitive sniff of a leopard or the glint from a lion's eye.

Similar scenes are played out at thousands of safari camps and lodges today, many of them harking back to this colonial era, providing a window on days gone by but with more than a hint of today's modern fashionable African-chic.

Many of South Africa's safari lodges boast glass-walled suites with private plunge pools, a contemporary decor and exceptional cuisine, not to mention the allure of charming staff and knowledgeable rangers and trackers who provide morning and evening game drives. Our favourite lodges and camps are small, boutique affairs, often family-owned - and many will now happily take children. Bush Spas and even gyms are all part of the experience too, so you can return from an exciting game drive and relax with a soothing massage or indulge in an invigorating treatment.  

It's undoubtedly hard to beat the exhilaration of an African safari,...but just imagine returning from a thrilling game drive and preparing yourself for a night under the stars in the African bush. Many of the camps and lodges now offer the chance for couples and families alike to spend an unforgettable moonlit night in a specially designed bush 'sleep-out' (or 'hide') which can take a variety of forms, from a unique treehouse to an elevated platform reached by a few wooden stairs. A hot bucket shower will hang from a tree and paraffin lamps will be set out beside your net-draped bed. You'll drift off to sleep to the sound of elephants trumpeting and lions calling ......it's heart-stopping stuff...and an experience you will no doubt treasure forever!
