As far as iconic safari experiences go, the four Singita Lodges are in a league of their own. Singita Ebony and Boulders lie in the Singita Reserve within the game-rich Sabi Sands, whilst Singita Lebombo and the delightful Sweni Lodge are set in a private concession in the Lebombo Hills. Voted ‘Africa’s Top Resort’ by Condé Nast Traveller, these sophisticated lodges offer truly exceptional all-round wildlife viewing in surroundings of unrivalled luxury and tranquillity. Although each lodge is an architectural masterpiece with a distinct style, the four lodges emanate a common theme of unsurpassed luxury and rare solitude. Set amongst the giant ebony trees which line the Sand River, the Relais & Châteaux Ebony Lodge (pictures 1 & 2) is a haven of colonial elegance. Nine sensational air-conditioned suites are equipped with double-sided fireplaces and glass-walled bathrooms which open onto plunge pools sunk into teak decks. Just downstream, Boulders (pictures 3 - 5) is an über-safari lodge of contemporary design and imaginative retro style. Space, light and hues of soft blues and greens take centre-stage in the glass-walled rooms with open-air bathrooms and beautiful infinity-edge pools suspended over the river. Built around the geometry of the rock with lofty vaulted ceilings, the suites feature layers of textures and raw materials which provide you with a deep, relaxing calmness. Described by Tatler magazine as ‘a cause for global celebration’ and featured extensively in some of the world’s leading publications, Singita Lebombo (pictures 6 & 7) is constructed almost entirely from bleached wood and glass. Perched like eagles nests on a sheer cliff top overlooking the confluence of the Nwanetsi and Sweni Rivers, 15 luxury loft suites with floor-to-ceiling glass wraparound windows offer sweeping views of the Lebombo mountain range. Uncluttered, sleek and modern, there is simply nothing like this – and it is really hard to comprehend how this luxury lodge, which now sits so comfortably within the landscape, came to be in this remote wilderness. A further six exclusive riverside suites exude a sense of intimacy and infinite seclusion at Sweni Lodge (picture 8). While similar in architecture and design to Lebombo, the Sweni suites are more grounded and the use of African artefacts lends a more classical safari feel. Although it is all too easy to forget the safari element once ensconced in these glamorous lodges, the game viewing is exceptional and the experience, ‘never-to-be-forgotten’. Lebombo guests have exclusive access to a 15,000 hectare private concession, whilst the Singita Reserve offers wonderful walking and driving safari opportunities for guests at Ebony and Boulders. Singita’s gourmet bush fare ranks amongst the world’s finest cuisine and all of the lodges offer spectacular bush breakfasts, al fresco meals on expansive wooden decks and 'lantern-lit' dining under the stars in reed enclosed traditional bomas.
