This charming country lodge of thatched buildings and ochre walls, is situated just 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape’s sun-drenched Sundays River Valley.

Evoking images of African, Moorish and Colonial design, the house is surrounded by a tranquil oasis of grassy courtyards and indigenous trees. Eight spacious and individually decorated bedrooms, resplendent with old wooden dressers, wicker chests, brass lamps, mosquito nets and plush pillows, open onto the courtyards or private verandahs.

At Elephant House – conviviality is the essence. As the garden is transformed into a magical outdoor banquet hall with hurricane lamps and beautifully dressed tables beneath the fiery orange skies, you will be plied with gourmet food, wine and first-class service. Owners Clive and Anne have created a wonderfully social atmosphere and their endearing charm is also reflected by all the staff.

To add to the complete sense of indulgence, Elephant House has introduced an ancient art of healing and relaxation to restore mind and body – choose from reviving foot therapies, relaxing back treatments, hot stone therapy and Indian massage.

The Elephant House Safari Co. conducts daily game drives into Addo in open landrovers, accompanied by qualified guides, or you may choose to explore the historic landmarks where the early settlers clashed with the Xhosas.
