Sheltered amongst oak trees at the foot of the Elandskloof Mountains, just over an hour’s drive north of Cape Town, historic Bartholomeus Klip is a magnificent homestead set on a working farm and private nature reserve. A picture postcard scene of rolling wheat fields, grazing pastures and acres of stunning vineyards and fynbos, all combine to create an enigmatic rural playground! Pretty designer fabrics, polished wooden floors and family antiques complete the homely ‘country house’ feel of this meticulously restored Victorian farmhouse. Four beautiful guest rooms are luxuriously fitted with deep ball-and-claw bathtubs and home-made soaps of therapeutic wild rosemary oil, extracted from the local fynbos. The Orchid Suite – separate from the main house –boasts a large private verandah with fabulous views that stretch as far as the eye can see. Situated on one of the largest sheep and wheat farms in the Cape, you can immerse yourself in the day-to-day farm activities, or simply indulge in the delicious fresh farm produce and gourmet meals – not to mention the hospitable farmstyle service. Numerous plant, bird and animal species are conserved within the reserve – many endangered and several quite unique – including the Geometric Tortoise and the Cape Mountain Zebra. Daily game drives, hiking in the mountains, cycling through the reserve, canoeing and windsurfing on the lake are just a few of the activities available. But if all that sounds too energetic, you can simply relax in the tranquil gardens by the pool and admire the wonderful vistas. The overall style is one of fresh, elegant, country living – fittingly underlined by Country Living Magazine!
