One of the original farmhouses built on the slopes of Table Mountain, the Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel is located in Cape Town’s ‘Gardens’ suburb. ‘Victorianised’ in 1912, this double-storey Georgian building now houses the exquisite Cape Cadogan – and since its heyday as an early 19th century farmhouse, the house has undergone numerous renovations. The brief to the interior designer was to create a swish interior to complement the regal façade – ‘a place that will encourage guests to be themselves’. Stylish, yet effortlessly able to retain the important sense of ‘feeling at home’, the Cape Cadogan oozes contemporary elegance with a touch of old-style glamour. A listed building, sensitively restored into a relaxing and gracious retreat, the Cape Cadogan is situated just off fashionable Kloof Street. The whitewashed wrought-iron gate extends a beguiling welcome into the tranquil haven beyond. Inside, the grand entrance hall shimmers as the light bounces off the beautiful silver gilt-framed sepia prints which adorn the walls. This ‘intimate luxury’ extends not only into the main reception room with its comfortable lounge and open fireplace, but also into the twelve spacious ensuite bedrooms, seven of which feature pretty courtyards or balconies, layered with rich fabrics and dazzling textures. ‘Bohemian chic’ is a hallmark of each of the rooms which all boast an eclectic mix of contemporary and antique furnishings. Cape Cadogan Mews (pictures 2 and 3) is the latest addition to the Cape Cadogan family – a delightful selection of four refurbished and modernised self-contained cottages which are tucked away off the street, just a few minutes walk from the main hotel reception. Each cottage boasts its own unique character with the interior design sensitively undertaken by Cape Town-based designer, David Strauss. Renowned for his quirky and striking approach, David’s first challenge was to transform the Mews into a modern development to complement the unique ambience of the hotel. Using a palette of soft whites and natural light, the Mews has thus become a tranquil enclave – uncluttered and clean – with sheer curtains, cushions in metallic grey, pearly white finishes, chandeliers and crisp white bed linen, all of which blend seamlessly to create the wonderful fresh new look. The size of the cottages ranges from one to four bedrooms – and each has an outdoor area, some even with a roof garden boasting amazing views across the city. Cape Town’s thriving café scene is literally on the doorstep and we highly recommend you take the time to experience at least one of the city’s vibrant deli’s – a table at the window bar at Melissa’s is a great place to watch the world go by!
