Recapture the golden days of colonial glamour on an unforgettable rail journey between Singapore and Bangkok aboard the world famous Eastern & Oriental Express. This legendary green and cream luxury train has captured the imagination of thousands of discerning travellers over the years – not to mention its appearance in many books and films, including Agatha Christie’s epic ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. Commencing in Singapore, the ‘E&O’ winds its way north through Malaysia, via Kuala Lumpur and Penang, into southern Thailand, stopping enroute at Kanchanaburi (and the Bridge over the River Kwai) before terminating in Bangkok. (The itinerary also operates in reverse). This corner of South East Asia is utterly enchanting – a tropical expanse of rainforest, rice paddies and exotic landscapes. Everything about the experience takes you back to a bygone age of rattan chairs on the verandah, linen suits and afternoon tea in china teacups. Personal service is a hallmark – and the stewards (in green and cream uniforms to match the train’s livery) will cater to your every whim 24 hours. Choose from three grades of beautifully appointed compartments – all fully air-conditioned with ensuite facilities (shower only) and large picture windows which frame the captivating scenery. There are 30 Superior Cabins (62 square feet in size with seating which converts to an upper and lower berth at night), 28 State Cabins (84 square feet in size with seating which converts to two single beds at night) and a small number of exclusive Presidential Cabins. Limited storage space in the Superior and State Cabins necessitates that you pack smaller bags for the few days that you are on board (your larger cases can be checked-in and stored separately). Dining is a culinary adventure with internationally renowned chefs creating tantalising dishes, using the finest fresh seasonal ingredients. Lunch and dinner are served in the two lavish restaurant cars whilst breakfast is delivered to your compartment each morning. Afternoon tea, served by your steward at 4 o’clock, is another E&O delight. At the very end of the train, the iconic Observation Car houses the second of two bars on board and is the perfect place to enjoy a mid-afternoon gin & tonic or a pre-dinner cocktail. One third of this car is an outdoor observation area where many guests while away the hours waving at local children and taking endless photographs of the ever-changing scenery. Early risers can enjoy tea and coffee in the Observation Car from 7am. The journey between Singapore and Bangkok takes 3 days and 2 nights whilst the reverse itinerary between Bangkok and Singapore takes 4 days and 3 nights. Other journeys between Bangkok and Vientiane (in Laos) – and Bangkok and Chiang Mai are also available.
