Safari Beach | November
Twin-destination honeymoons are a great way to maximise your holiday time and when it comes to combining excitement, adventure and relaxation, a safari/beach honeymoon is a great choice. Generally, the vast majority of couples choose to go on the safari part of their honeymoon first, leaving a week or so at the end of their holiday to flop on a beach.
Safaris are exciting and exhilarating, but after a wedding, can also be tiring due to the early starts required for morning game drives. They’re also low-key (most lodges aren’t the place for stilettos and glamorous dining), dusty (game drives leave you a little windswept) and intimate (many lodges offer communal dining) so may not suit everyone. However, going on safari is also one of the most incredible experiences you’ll ever have. There is nothing quite like seeing wild animals in their natural habitat and a good safari will remain with you forever.
The question of where to go is an important one and there are a number of considerations to take on board. If you’re looking to see your classic ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino – then head to lodges in countries like South Africa, Kenya, Botswana or Tanzania where this is most likely. Some reserves, for instance may be famed for elephants but have no rhinos, so make sure you know exactly what you’d like to see before you book.
Then think about what kind of safari experience you want. Are you looking for somewhere that offers you the chance to visit local villages, sleep out under the stars or go hot-air ballooning? Or are you happy just to see animals and chill out? In which case do you want a pool and a spa or do you mind not having one?
Also, think about how much moving around you want to do. Some couples choose to visit several lodges in order to see different parts of the country, but others might find the idea tiring. Finally, if the beach part of your honeymoon is very important to you, work out where you’d like this to be and choose the safari accordingly. Kenya and Tanzania are great twins with Zanzibar, while South Africa works well with Mauritius or Mozambique. By choosing destinations that are close together, you can cut down on travel costs and time.

1. Do you want to take malaria tablets? If not, choose a malaria-free reserve – South Africa offers some great choices. Remember that if you’re planning to get pregnant, you won’t be able to take medication.
2. Pack lightly. Some small planes that are used to take guests to safari lodges have a weight limit on luggage. If your bag is too heavy, then consider storing it somewhere safely to pick up on your way to the beach.
3. Trainers or hiking boots are a must, as is mosquito repellent, sun screen, a sunhat, sunglasses and of course a camera. Consider taking an extra memory card for all those wildlife photos and binoculars for close-up viewing.
