The West Coast of the South Island is known for its glaciers, its wild and rugged coastline and its rainforests.
Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are two of the most famous sites on the West Coast - these giant tongues of ice have squeezed down the valleys to just 250 metres above sea level. A guided glacier walk or an exhilerating heli-hike are 'must-dos' when visiting the West Coast.
To the north, the unique Pancake Rocks and blowholes at Punakaiki are another fascinating draw, whilst to the south, Lake Moeraki boasts ancient temperate rainforest and spectacular beaches which are home to fur seals and crested penguins.
