Nature runs wild at Lake Moeraki (meaning in Maori ‘to sleep or dream by day’) – and few places on earth can match its unique natural setting amidst ancient temperate rainforest on the banks of the Moeraki River on the South Island’s West Coast. This secluded 28 room wilderness retreat is a nature lover’s sanctuary… the spectacular beaches are home to fur seals and crested penguins – and you can walk through untouched lowland rainforest which stretches between pristine lakes, rivers and coastline. The daily programme of complimentary activities includes canoeing on the river and nature walks through the rainforest with knowledgeable guides – fishing trips and optional longer guided activities are also available for an additional cost. Choose between the comfortable Rainforest Rooms – or one of only four stylish Riverview Rooms (we highly recommend these) which benefit from super-king beds, spa baths, balconies and panoramic views. Breakfast and dinner, which are served in the main lodge overlooking the river, are included in your stay. Whitebait from the river and seafood from the coast are naturally specialities. A stay at Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki is all about enjoying the peace and serenity of the rainforest and the river, with no televisions or radios to disturb the solitude. The lodge is an hour from the West Coast glaciers, three hours from Wanaka and six hours from its sister property, Wilderness Lodge Arthur’s Pass. A stay of two or three nights is recommended
