It is not surprising that the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula is a favourite holiday escape for New Zealanders - with it’s pristine beaches, breathtaking native walks and abundant fishing spots. The history of the township began back in 1852 with the discovery of gold in the Driving Creek stream. This discovery initiated the first gold rush in New Zealand and the formation of Coromandel township. Milling of the majestic kauri forests assisted with the growth of this community and the rest of the peninsula and the area offers some wonderful walks through coastal native forests. A ‘must’ on any visitor’s holiday to the township is the popular Driving Creek Railway, New Zealand’s only narrow gauge mountain railway featuring stunning views and unique art features in a replanted native Kauri forest.
