Much smaller, more quaint, mystical and intimate than its counterpart Matemo, Medjumbe Private Island is just 1km long and 500 metres wide with several small bays, hidden coves and pristine white beaches – you can walk around it in about 45 minutes. Accessible via a 40 minute light aircraft flight from Pemba – or 20 minutes from Matemo, exclusivity and privacy are paramount here. Medjumbe is an ideal getaway for honeymooners and romantic couples.

Accommodation is provided in 13 thatched secluded chalets, each with an ensuite bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower, a private plunge pool and an outdoor sundeck with a hammock. The traditional Mozambique stone architecture adds texture and intrigue.

Medjumbe teems with fascinating birdlife, most notably the rare Black Heron – and you can also enjoy superb game fishing – marlin, sailfish, mackerel, dogtooth tuna and various species of kingfish and bonefish can all be found in the azure waters surrounding the island. The snorkelling and diving are a little more challenging than Matemo – and other watersports include waterskiing, hobie cat sailing, sea kayaking and sunset cruises.

The nearby island of Quissanga provides an idyllic spot for an afternoon’s romantic escape – or you can simply relax by the swimming pool. Dolphins are often spotted off-shore – and you are likely to see whales between August and November. There are no villages on Medjumbe – just an old lighthouse… so this really is a true Robinson Crusoe castaway island – Mozambique style. Like Matemo, Medjumbe has a restaurant and bar.
