Penang

Penang is one of Malaysia’s most famous destinations and offers a wealth of attractions for travellers. This large island is located off the West coast of Malaysia, in the Straits of Malacca.

The island itself is divided into different areas. The main beach is at Batu Ferringhi. A lively nightmarket and large resort hotels ensure a constant flow of tourists to this area but it is in Georgetown where the real heritage of Penang survives. Historically, Penang has always shown a strong Chinese influence and it is in Georgetown that some of the most well-preserved and colourful examples of Chinese architecture and lifestyle remain. Even today, it is still possible to see rickshaws plying the narrow streets and Georgetown has some beautifully maintained colonial architecture, including the refined and historical E&O Hotel.

In particular, Penang is renowned for its cuisine, as all Penangites will proudly tell you. Sample some of the famous dishes, including curry fish head, chicken and rice or dim sum.
