Malaysia’s beaches are world-renowned and justifiably so. Perhaps Malaysia’s most famous beach escape is the idyllic island of Langkawi. In fact, Langkawi is, along with Thai islands such as Phuket, probably one of Asia’s most famous and evocative beach destinations. However, whilst the island does have many large resorts, it does not seem to have experienced the wide scale development which has occurred on Phuket. As a result, the atmosphere is relaxed and facilities are great.
The scenery of Langkawi is particularly beautiful. An archipelago which consists of 99 individual islands against the stunning backdrop of the Andaman Sea on Malaysia’s West coast, the setting boasts the typical limestone karst scenery which is so synonymous with this region. The Tarutao Island of Southern Thailand is within striking distance and it is possible to enjoy a day’s island hopping or a visit to the nearby Marine Park.
Langkawi is an ideal destination for families, since there is a fabulous choice of high quality, well established resorts, as well as many varied activities to suit everyone. In addition to some good shopping, visitors can explore the island’s mangroves, hire a car for the day or ride the cable car.
Pangkor island must surely qualify as one of the world’s most romantic destinations, largely thanks to the exclusive Pangkor Laut resort. What better way to experience Malaysia than in a beautiful water bungalow, overlooking turquoise waters and nearby islands?
Penang is another popular West coast beach destination, ideal for those who prefer large resorts and plenty of atmosphere.
The West Coast has its monsoon season between May and October although showers during this time can be restricted to the afternoon only.
