Known locally as the Blue Mansion, Cheong Fatt Tze is the former historic home of a Penang Chinese merchant family which has been painstakingly preserved and is now converted into a sixteen room guesthouse. Built in 1880, the current owners make every effort to only restore parts of the house when absolutely necessary, as a way of preserving as many of the original features as possible. There are twice daily tours of this colourful property so that guests can learn more about its UNESCO award-winning restoration, the fascinating history and artistic techniques of the mansion. Part cultural homestay, part guesthouse, this is not for those who require all the frills of a luxury hotel. Rooms are large but relatively simple as the owners try to preserve the authenticity of the building. There are no televisions in the bedrooms and all furniture is original antique. Breakfast is served in the central courtyard and there is also a communal television room and small kitchen area. The crumbling elegance of this unusual property creates an irresistible charm, sure to delight all who stay here.
