A beautiful two day journey along the Mekong
This is a wonderful two day journey that combines days spent aboard a converted rice barge on the Mekong River and a night at a secluded and atmospheric riverside lodge. Departing downriver from the Thai / Lao border in the Golden Triangle region of Thailand, the first day’s cruising takes in the ever-changing and beautiful jungle clad mountain scenery either side of the river – you will stop to complete customs formalities before cruising past small villages, seeing fishermen casting giant nets, and even stopping to visit a small riverside ethnic minority village, which cannot be reached by road. Eventually, arriving at the Luang Say Lodge in time for sunset. The lodge offers wonderful views, a certain rustic charm and delicious cuisine. Overlooking the Mekong itself, it consists of 17 individual bungalows, constructed from solid wood, with rattan and bamboo decorations. Bungalows are connected by a series of wooden walkways, lit by lanterns at night. Rooms are fan-cooled, since the mountain air in this part of Laos is naturally temperate. All have private en-suite bathrooms with hot water showers, Western style toilets and mosquito nets to ensure suitable protection while you sleep. Best of all, the rooms have huge windows with shutters that can be fully opened, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking sight of sunrise over the Mekong from the moment you open your eyes. The restaurant and terrace also have superb views of the Mekong River. Enjoy your first Beer Lao on the terrace at sunset before tasting some traditional Lao dishes at the restaurant. Don’t miss the lodge’s delicious ‘laab’ or minced chicken (or pork) salad. Of course, no Lao meal is complete without sticky rice. The second day starts with an early breakfast on the lodge’s terrace and a visit to the local market in the village of Pakbeng before re-boarding the boat. The relaxing cruise takes in the interesting Buddhist caves at Pak Ou as well as a visit to a small village renowned for its production of ‘Lao Lao’, the local rice whisky. On arrival in Luang Prabang you will be transferred to your hotel no doubt fully adjusted to the laid-back pace that Loas is renowned for. Please note there is no cruise operation between 01 May and 30 june every year due to annual maintenance.
