La Residence Phou Vao

Formerly known as the Pansea, La Résidence is Luang Prabang’s finest hotel. Part of the Orient Express group, the 34 room hotel combines the old world charm of Luang Prabang with a sense of luxury and style.

Situated on the Hill of Kites, around a twenty minute walk from Luang Prabang town, the hotel enjoys majestic views over the surrounding countryside, rice paddies and rivers. The stunning infinity swimming pool overlooks the hotel’s own three hectares of gardens as well as the surrounding fields and agricultural lands.

The style of the hotel is stunning and unmistakably Lao, featuring low, dark wood furniture covered in tasteful silks. Vibrant wall hangings add a splash of colour which is complemented by rich wooden flooring and elegant Lao artefacts. Even the thick wood doors have golden fixtures, which are carved like the famous temples of Luang Prabang.

Rooms are large, with unimpeded views of the surrounding countryside. Again the stylish dark rosewood contrasts well with the lightness of the room and the elegant use of white linens or artfully draped mosquito nets. Brightly coloured cushions and wall hangings ensure that guests retain a sense of the magic of Laos.

Bathrooms are a highlight of this hotel group and the huge stone bathtubs are a signature feature, perfect for relaxing after a tour of Luang Prabang.

The hotel’s cuisine is also renowned, making the restaurant a deservedly popular destination even for those who are not staying at La Résidence. Fine French dishes are given exotic touches and the best of the traditional Lao dishes are also served. The indoors restaurant is accessed through a passage decorated with paintings of guardian divinities and the al fresco seating is on a breathtaking terrace, overlooking Mount Phousi and the hilltop temple.

La Résidence has recently added a spa, inspired by the concept of a typical Lao village, with a series of villas set around a lush water lily pond. The treatments include Laotian massage (inspired by Thai massage), as well as oil massages and facials. In addition, there is a traditional Lao style herbal steam room and low-calorie meals are served in the spa’s pool area.
