The Funzi Keys, Funzi Island

Tucked away on a tiny unspoiled island off the southern Kenya coast, just 15 minutes flying time from Mombasa, The Funzi Keys is the perfect beach hideaway for honeymooners and couples in pursuit of a romantic hedonistic escape.

Wholly embracing its isolated seclusion and beautiful natural scenery (Funzi Island is adorned with mangrove trees, swaying palms and sugar white sand), Funzi's accommodation has been designed to not only blend unobtrusively with its idyllic setting, but also to reflect the local culture and coastal architecture. The 17 spacious cottages (bandas) have been built from stone and thatch with large netted windows open to the balmy sea breezes. There are nine Superior Sea Front Cottages (including two Family Cottages with an adjoining twin room for children), and eight new Garden Cottages – all with ensuite showers and hand-carved four poster beds, romantically draped with mosquito nets. Brightly coloured fabrics, beach bags with flip-flops, straw hats and sarongs, not to mention the warm hospitality, all further enhance the barefoot laid-back ambience.

The essence of Funzi is absolute informality with no dress code or fixed meal times. There is a large free form pool – and a variety of water-based activities are available including deep sea fishing in the Pemba Channel, visits to the nearby sandbank and sunset dhow cruises.
