Borobudur is the world’s biggest Buddhist monument complex. Built around 800 AD, it looms out of a patchwork of bottle-green paddy fields and swaying palm tops, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. This colossal Buddhist relic is one of Indonesia’s marvels. After the decline of Buddhism and the shift of power to East Java, the monument was abandoned soon after its completion and for centuries the complex lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash. Located in Yogyakarta on Java, just a short flight from Bali, this is a great overnight excursion for those who want to experience some of Indonesia’s rich culture. During this two day trip not only visit the spectacular Borobudur, but also the nearby temples of Candi Pawon and Mendut, the Sultan’s Palace located in the heart of the fascinating old city and the 9th century Prambanan Temples, a vast complex of four major shrines.
