Located at Canggu, on the Southwest coast of Bali, the Tugu is both historic, stylish and truly unique. Canggu is popular with surfers and the hotel directly overlooks this dramatic and beautiful beach, around twenty minutes’ drive from the restaurants and nightlife of Seminyak. Opened by a lawyer who has been a keen collector of Indonesian antiques for over forty years, the Tugu is part museum, part art gallery, part boutique hotel. The eighteen rooms are mainly split into two levels in a traditional style building with a wooden top floor. The downstairs rooms have a covered private plunge pool but the upstairs rooms have wonderful views of the sea and an indoor terrace which has a sunken metal bathtub and an area for massage. It is the two suites which are one of the resort’s main attractions. Each is dedicated to an artist associated with Bali. The largest suite honours Walter Spies and has its own large swimming pool. Recently voted one of Bali’s most romantic suites, the other is dedicated to Le Mayeur and his lover –a famous Indonesian dancer. The suite contains some of the original furniture from their home and is surrounded by romantic lily ponds. The spa rooms are dotted around the resort and each has its own theme and treatment. Tugu also has five equally special dining areas – one is a black and red Chinese temple, over one hundred years old, another is a traditional Balinese style rustic kitchen. Guests are encouraged to dine wherever they please and this out of the ordinary attitude to dining thoroughly reflects the out of the ordinary atmosphere of this truly unique resort.
