Safaris are exciting and exhilarating, but after a wedding, can also be tiring due to the early starts required for morning game drives. If you’re looking to see your classic ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino – then head to lodges in countries like South Africa, Kenya, Botswana or Tanzania where this is most likely. Some reserves, for instance may be famed for elephants but have no rhinos, so make sure you know exactly what you’d like to see before you book.

Then think about what kind of safari experience you want. Are you looking for somewhere that offers you the chance to visit local villages, sleep out under the stars or go hot-air ballooning? Or are you happy just to see animals and chill out? In which case do you want a pool and a spa or do you mind not having one?

Also, think about how much moving around you want to do. Some couples choose to visit several lodges in order to see different parts of the country, but others might find the idea tiring. Finally, if the beach part of your honeymoon is very important to you, work out where you’d like this to be and choose the safari accordingly. Kenya and Tanzania are great twins with Zanzibar, while South Africa works well with Mauritius or Mozambique. By choosing destinations that are close together, you can cut down on travel costs and time.
