Flights to Fiji operate 4 or 5 times a week (depending on time of year) via Los Angeles with a combination of Air New Zealand and Air Pacific. From December 2009, twice weekly flights will also operate via Hong Kong. Whichever route you fly, the journey time is approximately 24 hours in total (we promise it is well worth it!). Ask your consultant about stopping over in LA or Hong Kong or upgrading to Premium Economy or Business Class.

Surrounded by the crystal clear, turquoise waters of the Namena Barrier Reef, the tiny dragon-shaped island of Namenalala rises dramatically from the depths of the Koro Sea and is home to one of Fiji’s smallest and lesser-known hideaways, Moody’s Namena. The word ‘Namena’ is Fijian for ‘empty’ – and this lush, jungle-clad island was totally uninhabited until its current owners, Tom and Joan Moody, discovered it in 1983 and decided to make it their home. They camped on the beach for the first few weeks whilst clearing some of the island’s impenetrable jungle to make way for the careful construction of this unique and small eco-retreat.

The island lies 15 miles off the coast of Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu – and is accessible via a 45 minute scheduled flight from Nadi to Savusavu followed by an hour and a half’s exhilarating boat ride (those suffering from seasickness should note that the open seas can be rough). A seaplane charter between Nadi and Moody’s is an alternative, but more costly option.

Today, this mile-long, 110 acre island paradise accommodates a maximum of just 12 guests in 6 rustic hexagonal-shaped bures, each perched along the ridge-top commanding magnificent ocean views. Built from native woods, bamboo and cane, to ensure a seamless blend with the surrounding natural environment, each bure has a romantic kingsize canopy bed draped in mosquito netting, a wrap-a-round verandah and floor-to-ceiling louvred sliding doors on almost all sides –you will be cooled by the sea breezes whilst enjoying breathtaking panoramic views! There is no electricity (power is provided by a wind-turbine) so the bures are romantically lit by gas lanterns –all part of Moody’s unique and irresistible charm!

The retreat covers just 10 acres of the island, with the remainder left as nature intended. Hiking trails wind through the lush, tropical forest and pristine white sand beaches cling to the beautiful fringes. The surrounding Namena Barrier Reef – known for its rich diversity of corals and marine life – is a haven for divers – and guests staying between December and March may even spot hawksbill turtles laying their eggs on the beach or possibly even baby turtles emerging from the eggs and making their first footsteps to the sea!

Other activities include windsurfing, kayaking, beach volleyball, fishing and bird-watching – or you may prefer to head to your own private beach for a romantic picnic …otherwise, just relax with a good book in one of the hammocks strung between the coconut palms!

Meals are usually served communally in the main bure and the cuisine is a delightful blend of fresh produce and seafood delicacies - with an island twist. Private dining can also be arranged.
