Beautiful sandy beaches, swaying palms, tropical rainforest, an intimate setting and some of the best scuba diving in the world – this idyllic island has it all! Matangi enjoys an enviable location in Fiji’s lesser known and breathtaking ‘northern group of islands’ – and your journey north begins with a scenic 1 hour 15 minute flight from Nadi to Fiji’s ‘Garden Island’ – Taveuni – which lies 6 miles west of Matangi. From Taveuni airport, a 20 minute drive (past the friendly locals who will all wave as you go by!) takes you to the boat landing for the final leg of your journey – an exhilarating 15 minute speedboat ride to beautiful Matangi. This 240 acre private island is predominantly lush tropical jungle, with a volcanic rim which encloses beautiful palm-fringed Horseshoe Bay. The island is owned and run by the Douglas family (originally of Scottish descent) whose ancestors first arrived on Matangi in the 1870’s, when they worked the land as a coconut and cattle plantation. The island has just 13 bures in total, including 3 unique Tree Houses perched high up in the treetops, commanding magnificent views over the beach, ocean and neighbouring islands. The other 10 bures are spread out along the beachfront, close to the water’s edge. All the bures have been modelled on the traditional Fijian home – so full use has been made of the native timbers with bamboo and coconut palm thatch. Other key features include high ceilings and large louvre windows which allow in the cool breezes and boast stunning views. Honeymooners and romantic couples will adore the Tree Houses – each of which has a large deck, separate living area, outdoor shower and jacuzzi! For two couples travelling together, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Villa Matangi, tucked away on its own private point overlooking the ocean, is the perfect choice. Matangi offers a wide range of activities. For the energetic, magnificent hiking trails await – one of the best, being a steep climb through the rainforest to the summit of Matangi’s highest peak, where you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Horseshoe Bay below. On the way, walk through the old coconut plantations, which are now home to cows, goats, pigs and horses. The island is surrounded by aquamarine waters and stunning coral reefs just waiting to be explored. A 'must' is the weekly excursion to Taveuni’s Bouma National Park, renowned for its stunning waterfalls and many beautiful walks. A visit to the local villages on the neighbouring island of Qamea is also highly recommended. Alternatively, kayak to Horseshoe Bay for a romantic breakfast for two. Of course, you may prefer to be pampered with a massage or body treatment in the Spa, relax by the pool, or sip a cocktail at sunset on the overwater deck of the bar whilst enjoying the stunning views and impromptu guitar sessions of the local Fijian staff – only at Matangi!
