Comprised of over 60 beautiful islands, very few of which are inhabited, this magical destination offers some of the best sailing, snorkelling and diving in the world, making it perfect for water babies! Offering a wonderfully sleepy and slow paced way of life, the British Virgin Islands are a fantastic choice for families, friends and couples looking to cruise the glittering Caribbean Seas and discover the hidden gems of this remote, tranquil location. With secluded bays and miles of pristine white sand beaches, along with low key tourism – visitors will be delighted by the authentic local bars and restaurants scattered around the islands – On a sailing holiday around BVI’s (as they are more widely known) you can choose a different stretch of sand to relax on, snorkelling location to try or local bar for cocktail sampling, every day of the week! Known as Natures Little Secrets, it is easy to see why when you sail around this enchanting group of islands.
Please note that sailing durations in the British Virgin Islands are flexible - choose from as little as 3 nights if you would like a taster of a sailing holiday, or if you would prefer to spend longer discovering these beautiful islands, just let us know and we can arrange that for you as well!
Please see below for a typical 7 night BVI Sailing Itinerary…
Sailing time – Approximately 1 hourHead to the yacht to meet your crew and after some time to settle in, set off on a short sail across the well-protected Sir Francis Drake Channel towards Cooper Island. Stop off at Salt Island enroute for the first snorkelling experience of your trip! Expect to see Green Turtles and Eagle Rays aplenty! After exploring the underwater life here, head to Cooper Island, where you will moor in Manchioneel Bay for a lovely evening of delicious food overlooking the beautiful bay. If you are feeling lively, venture to the shore and enjoy a painkiller cocktail or 2 at Cooper Island Beach Club!
Sailing time – Approximately 3 hoursAfter your first night on the yacht, your itinerary will take you to the largest of the islands, Virgin Gorda. Sail past the uninhabited Ginger and Jerusalem Islands as well as the lively Spanish Town, before arriving at North Sound. The perfect base to enjoy watersports such as kitesurfing, paddleboarding and windsurfing, or just find a spot on one of the secluded coves and relax by the crystal clear waters for the afternoon.
Sailing time – Approximately 2 hoursEnjoy a relaxed sail back down the coast of Virgin Gorda towards Spanish Town, enjoying the stunning scenery and glorious weather on the way. Arrive in bustling Spanish Town where you can hop off the boat to explore … hire a car or take a taxi to some of the islands hot spots! We highly recommend a trip to The Baths National Park which is an outstanding site of huge granite boulders and sparkling pools of shallow turquoise water. For the really active, a hike up Gorda Peak could be on the cards, or for the less adventurous, venture to one of the lovely waterfront bars – our favourite is CocoMaya!
Sailing time – Approximately 2½ hoursA great spot for more snorkelling or perhaps a scuba dive, Marina Cay, surrounded by beautiful coral reef, is a wonderful sail through the open Caribbean Sea from Spanish Town. After enjoying a swim with the resident marine life, Pusser’s Bar & Restaurant will be calling you to sample one of their infamous rum punches!
Sailing time – Approximately 2 hoursCruise past Great Camanoe and Little Camanoe to Guana Island, where you can moor at the spectacular White Bay and explore a little of what is on offer on the island… home to red-legged tortoise, Caribbean flamingo and stout iguana, it is a nature lovers paradise! After a short stop, resume your journey and enjoy the stunning views of Tortola’s mountainous north coast before arriving at Cane Garden Bay , where you will find a picturesque beach flanked by lush rainforest – perfect for an afternoon hike! If you’d rather stay on the beach, there are watersports available in the bay – And it is home to some of the BVI’s best beach bars!
Sailing time – Approximately 1¼ hoursEnjoy a relaxed sail to Jost Van Dyke, perhaps with a lunch stop at the amazing Sandy Cay – an uninhabited island where a spit of perfectly soft, white sand reaches into the sparkling sea… an idyllic picnic location! Arrive at Great Harbour later in the day and head to White Bay where, after a sumptuous dinner prepared by your crew, you will find some of the best nightlife in the BVI’s!
Sailing time – Approximately 2½ hoursAfter a lazy morning set sail for Norman Island - said to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Weave your way past the US Virgin Islands before arriving at The Bight, one of the many coves that Norman Island is famous for. Visitors will delight in searching for treasure on these unspoiled beaches! Don’t miss the snorkelling or diving here – it is remarkable, with the waters teeming with vibrant tropical fish!
Sailing time – Approximately 2 hoursSpend a leisurely morning returning to The Moorings base at Wickhams Cay II. Stop and explore the beautiful reefs and bays that you sail past before arriving back before noon. If this is the end of your trip, then enjoy the sights that Tortola has to offer before boarding your flight home. If you are continuing your holiday with a stay at one of our stunning BVI hotels, then we will arrange a seamless transfer for you to your chosen property!
