Big trunks, waterways, predators & starry nights
Botswana offers such a depth of variety in wildlife and scenery, that we recommend combining a stay in at least two different areas. The Okavango Delta is a ‘must’ for 2 or 3 nights whilst to the north-east, the varied habitats of the Chobe and Linyanti Reserves provide a wonderful complement to the Delta. In stark and striking contrast, the moon-like expanse of the Makgadikgadi saltpans of the Kalahari completes the Botswana experience for those interested in discovering the overwhelming diversity of this spectacular country. Camp sizes are small and intimate – and most are only accessible by light aircraft. The main gateways into Botswana are Maun and Kasane – and a suggested itinerary could work as follows: Days 1 & 2 Linyanti Reserve Arrive in Kasane (possibly following a few nights on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls) and connect with a light aircraft charter into the Linyanti Reserve for 2 nights at Kings Pool Camp (picture 2). Days 3 & 4 Okavango Delta Enjoy a scenic flight into the heart of the Okavango Delta for 2 nights at either Jao Camp (picture 3) or Vumbura Plains (picture 4). Days 5 - 7 Kalahari Fly to Maun and connect with a scenic flight to the Makgadikgadi saltpans for a unique opportunity to explore and understand the Kalahari in all its complexity and vastness. Enjoy nights of complete desert isolation at Jack’s Camp (picture 5). Oozing character and romance, this ‘1940’s style’ tented camp offers a unique combination of authenticity, comfort and elegance. Dinner is served on damask tablecloths under an endless African sky, torn by shooting stars! Ten very private, spacious, classically styled ensuite tents are built on decks and set into a palm grove, creating an oasis of civilisation and luxury amidst this stark desert environment. Serene and soulful, Jack’s offers a fascinating insight into the geology and history of the Kalahari. Quad bike excursions onto the vast salt pans, walking safaris with San (Bushman) trackers, a morning’s stroll with a family of meerkats – and even a rare opportunity to see the elusive Brown Hyena – are all part of the ‘Jack’s’ experience. Day 8 Return to Maun for your onward connection.
