Introducing Dhiren Pereira, General Manager of The Oberoi Mauritius, a Turquoise favourite for couples looking for a romantic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The hotel boasts a traditional yet sophisticated design with an Asian influence throughout…plus one of the best beaches on the island!

Hi Dhiren, How long have you been General Manager at the hotel?

4 months and counting …I have however, spent a total of 5 years in Mauritius in previous stints at The Oberoi, Mauritius.

If you could sum up the hotel in three words, what would they be?

Tranquillity….Space….Luxury

The accommodation at the hotel looks stunning; could you tell us a bit about the style of the property, and where that inspiration came from?

The property amalgamates Asian, European and African cultures into a unique resort experience. Mauritius, with its abundant natural beauty, was the sole influence in defining this fairy-tale resort with refined luxury and the most glorious sunsets.

Do you get to know the guests that come and stay with you at the hotel?

It is my endeavour to meet all guests on arrival and departure, including early arrivals and late departures, and at least 2 – 3 times during their stay. The team and I ensure we have a meaningful conversation with all guests who pass through our doors thus providing us with an opportunity to ensure they have a relaxed stay with us. We believe that every single interaction is about creating a special memory for them

Which is your favourite restaurant? Do you have a favourite dish?

On The Rocks at The Oberoi is my favourite restaurant at lunch and dinner due to the unique dining experience that it provides. It is located on top of dark volcanic rocks that extend into the ocean and guests can almost dip their toes in the waters as they savour fresh sea food from the live grill besides other a la carte options. The “French Farm Pork Ribs” with grilled potatoes and herbed rice is a must try at night.

Do you tend to have a lot of repeat guests coming back to the hotel every year?

We have on an average over 10% of our guests that return to us every year. The warm personalised service along with the tranquillity that the resort provides ensures this percentage increases year on year.

Which is your favourite excursion on offer to the guests at the hotel?

A Day Out at Sea is a must on every trip to Mauritius. One can either take a catamaran or a speed boat and experience the marine life on offer at the Northern islands off the coast of Mauritius. Snorkeling in the Indian Ocean, lounging around on fine sand and a sumptuous BBQ on board completes the day trip spent in the sun, at sea and on the luxury boat. On another note, should our guests not want to venture out of the resort, we have an exciting program of Oberoi experiences called “Touching Senses” at the resort.

Experience wine tasting in our restored Gunpowder Room, a cooking class with our chefs, a sculpture or painting class, star gazing, a Hindu ceremony, nature walk, t’ai chi, yoga or meditation. All these activities are complimentary.

Finally – would you say the hotel is more suited to couples, or families? Or both?

We cater to both couples retreats as well as family getaways. The resort is spread over 24 acres of lush sub-tropical gardens and hence provides the space for all to co-inhabit. Our couples find peace and tranquillity at the resort with our private accommodation, various quaint beach stretches, adult only pool overlooking Turtle Bay and Oberoi spa. Our families also have a lot on offer including a children’s activity centre, interconnecting pavilion and villa family combinations and a range of water sports on offer.
