The laid-back town of Darwin is the gateway to the lush and tropical 'Top End' of the Northern Territory. 150 kilometres east of Darwin, Kakadu is the largest National Park in Australia and the country's first to be included on the World Heritage list. For many visitors, the main attraction of the Kakadu / Arnhemland region is wildlife. Kakadu is home to more than 75 species of reptiles and more than a third of all Australian bird species. It is an area of spectacular natural beauty - where lush forest, dramatic gorges and cascading waterfalls dominate the landscape. More than 5000 rock art sites have been identified in Kakadu and the park is extremely important to Aboriginal people. One of Australia's newest retreats has recently opened near Kakadu National Park - the rustically chic Bamurru Plains.
