This bijou little love nest for two opened on Tasmania’s east coast in March 2010, set in 250 acres of wildlife-filled ancient forest, up a stony unsealed track. Owners Brett and Brian, who built the award-winning Avalon Coastal Retreat, have filled Rocky Hills Retreat with rich and provocative art, edgy books and sumptuous furnishings. The outside deck melts into the forest, and has a sweetly scented huon pine bath tub for two that holds its heat for an eternity, providing divine al fresco bathing in total privacy other than the possums and owls for company. The 'pièce de résistance' is a private art studio, once a Church of Christ hall, that comes with the property, giving residents of Rocky Hills Retreat an exquisite space in which to draw, paint, sculpt, listen to music or just relax in contemplation. Rocky Hills Retreat's stunning vista of Great Oyster Bay bounded by the Freycinet Peninsula and Maria Island has changed little since the ice age. The town of Swansea has a selection of restaurants and visit to Kate’s Berry Farm is a must for melt-in-your-mouth pastries and jams, as well as the effusive and irresistible charm of Kate herself.
